In the late 1990s, a study by the Salem Anbu Illam Social Service Society revealed the struggles of marginalised children and youth in Namakkal. Many were working in lorry body-building units and poultry farms, while others were affected by the HIV/AIDS crisis within their families.
To respond to this reality, the Salesians initiated focused interventions for youth at risk. Soon the idea of a dedicated home for these children took shape. In 2004, the Provincial Chapter approved the project, and in 2007, construction began. Seventeen children were the first residents, marking the humble beginning of Don Bosco Namakkal.
On 5 December 2008, the home was officially inaugurated. From then on, it became a centre for holistic care, providing shelter, education, and emotional support. Over the years, different leaders and teams contributed to its growth, strengthening programmes and widening outreach.
In 2018, a government-supported NCLP School for dropouts was started, offering education to children who had missed out. In 2020, the Salesians were invited to administer Christ King Matriculation Higher Secondary School, expanding the scope of formal education. The school soon received higher secondary accreditation and has since celebrated excellent results, including a 100% pass rate for its first Class XII batch in 2022.
Parallelly, other initiatives flourished: seven evening study centres, migrant ministry, youth study circles for competitive exams, women’s tailoring programmes, eco-clubs, summer camps, and more. With each passing year, Don Bosco Namakkal evolved into not just a home, but a community hub for learning, empowerment, and hope.
